The second reflection of ENGL 4740 was based on the presentation by our classmates. This reflection requires us to contemplate and think critically in dealing with questions given by the lecturer. Hence, in this reflection, we will cover all four questions asked by the lecturer (dr. Rozina Abdul Ghani) during the class presentation.
The first question asked is
regarding our opinion in the relation of listening skills and language
learning; “What is your say in ‘listening
has also been considered from a further interpretation in recent years when it
is examined in relation not only to comprehension, but also to language learning?’.
We think that listening skill is an important aspect of learning a language as
it is the first skill we acquired naturally when we were born into this world.
In the field of Psycholinguistics, we learned that babies need a huge amount of
exposure in order to acquire language i.e. by listening.
The second question asked is “How reading and listening skills enhance or
improve your speaking skill”? We think that reading and listening did play
a huge role in enhancing our speaking skill. By reading, we add up to our
vocabulary and unconsciously learnt the correct grammatical structure of a
language. On the other hand, listening helps us to pronounce new words we
acquired through reading.
The third question asked by the
lecturer is regarding the different roles of cooperative CALL; “Do you think these roles work”? We think that these roles do work. The
presence of four roles (encourager, checker, reporter and recorder) enables
group work to be done effectively as each of the members of a group can focus
on playing a different role thus focusing on doing a specific task. This
ensures group work to be divided equally among the members.
The fourth question asked is “How excited are you in using the software”?
In regards to the software presented (Paragraph Punch), we did feel excited
using the software. This is because it really helps students in writing
creatively as it guides students in writing their own ideas rather than spoon
feeding them all the input. It can really help with pre-university students in
writing their essays effectively.
