The sixth reflection of ENGL 4740 was based on the second topic which is the Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). It refers to the communication that takes place between people via computers. There are two types of CMC interactivity; synchronous and asynchronous interaction. For this topic, we were asked to write a reflection on the ways to use CMC for the betterment of the ummah
Internet is inescapable
in today’s world as we are living in the era of advanced digital technology and
information. Facebook, for example, allows users to share current news,
articles, and even videos regarding certain issues. For instance, Muslims
become more aware about what is happening in the Islamic world such as
Palestine since many people post videos and articles through Facebook. From
this, both Muslim and non-Muslim can benefit themselves by gaining more knowledge
and awareness as well as sending their prayers and help to those in hardship.
Furthermore,
CMC can be used for the betterment of the ummah as it acts as a medium
to spread da’wah among Muslim and non-Muslim communities. Da’wah has
been spread daily and continuously on social media such as Twitter, Facebook
and Instagram. There are many prominent and reliable Muslim scholars that
create an official page or account to promote the Islamic values and it is
easily accessible to anyone. With this, Muslims are not only spreading da’wah
but they can also ask questions to the scholar for a better understanding about
Islam.
Last but not
least, by using the advanced technology, Muslim community can strengthen their
bond even though they are living in a different country with a different time
zone. As we all know, the Prophet (pbuh) warns us to not break the ties and
relationship with our relatives and friends. With the current features of
Internet, it helps the community to stay connected with each other even though
some might come from different religious background.
